During most of this time, I had some kind of bug going on where I would just hear zombie sounds intermittently, even if I was alone in the middle of a field. I wonder if they throw that in as a paranoia effect?
Once I reach the last building before the open field, a dilapidated shed, I stop to catch my breath and see if I am being pursued. Some time passes, and there are no signs of anyone behind me. I am really thirsty now, need to move. I crouch down, and begin moving towards towards the farmhouse I had picked out from near the shore. It is nicer than most homes I have seen. There are two small sheds, and the main house is at least two stories tall. I stop a few times looking for movement. Listening.
When I get to the house, I check over my shoulder one more time. The unknown city on the coast sits there, with no movement visible to me from the porch of the farmhouse. The house is unoccupied. I find a pair of military style cargo pants which let me hold more stuff. I find a yellow raincoat with some pockets. I put it on realizing its probably not the most concealable thing ever, but I need the pocket space. Most importantly of all, I find a can of soda, canned spaghetti, and on the floor of the bedroom upstairs an FNx 45 handgun!
The downside, is there is no ammo for the weapon. On the bright side, I think I am a little less thirsty. I drank the soda, and ate the spaghetti right away but I still have some thirst. On the way out of the house, I notice something on a cabinet that I had almost missed - a compass!
I leave the farmhouse headed north, uphill, into the trees. There is a road ahead. I move across it and keep to the trees, moving north. Out in the valley to my right is what looks like a power plant, but I keep moving north. I am hoping to find some kind of small town where I can forage with less risk of bandits.
Some time passes. I have been loosely following a road from the treeline for a while now. I veer off into the woods, thinking of following some power lines off to my west. To my west it begins to drop downhill, and I can see what looks like a smaller coastal town. I keep going a bit more north and uphill, when through the trees I spot a few small cottages.
As I advance on the village, a sign out front reads "Pusta". I wait and watch a few minutes, but dont see anything. I clear most of the town without incident. I find an eat some canned tuna, and more canned spaghetti. I take a can of baked beans with me, and even find a cool pair of aviator sunglasses. I am no longer hungry, but still thirsty. Then, I spot a town well! I drink a half dozen times from the well - much better.
I am clearing the last few small structures in the north of the village, when I hear the scream of a zombie. Its only one though, and I am able to run north up the steep hill. Ducking into dense vegetation and over a few downed trees. After 100 meters or so, I stop and make sure that I am no longer being followed.
After continuing north, moving through steep and densely wooded terrain, I spot a pair of buildings along a road in the valley ahead. I take my time moving down. One building is a small shack with nothing of interest, however, the other building appears to be a roadside restaurant with a living quarters. I find some 7.62mm rounds, and some .357 rounds, but neither will fit in my .45. Disappointed, I move to check the last room.
WHOA! I shiny red backpack sitting on the floor just for me! I throw it over my shoulders, feeling like maybe I finally have something going right.
Im thirsty again.
This was probably my most productive session so far. I had a non-fatal encounter with a player, and then a successful escape of both a hostile player and a zombie. The game does an incredible job of making it challenging and fun to survive, and its only in alpha release! I logged off in the woods outside of the restaurant. The backpack is a game changer. I have already had to pick and choose which valuable things to take with me for lack of space. Should be less of an issue going forward.
