Hives

So the sever hives are now separated and working for hardcore and normal servers.  What this means, is that you have a persistent character per hive.  I have one character that is persistent across all hardcore servers, and one character that is persistent across all normal servers.

My normal character is well geared currently with plenty of supplies and military equipment.  I left him in the hills above Elektro waiting to meet a friend who has just recently purchased the game.

I tried the hardcore server hive in the meantime.  Currently, the only difference between hardcore and normal is that you can only use first person view in hardcore servers.  This prevents players from exploiting third person perspective in order to see around or over objects that their character cannot see around with their line of sight.

I began in Elektro, and quickly got some decent starter gear.  I had some food, a screwdriver to open things, a canteen, and then a fire ax.  A short while later, I had also found an old double barrel shotgun and some rounds for it.

I started playing on a server with around 20 people on it.  I have played the game enough that zombies pose almost no threat once you find an ax, and there was little excitement gearing up another character with little risk.  Well, the risk came into play as I searched a small villa in between Cherno and Elektro.

I was being as watchful as I could, moving from house to house.  At some point, I hear a round ricochet near me, and I take off running back the way I came.  As I run, more rounds are landing, I hear a shot and its to my left, north up the hill.  I glance left as I run, but dont immediately see the threat.  I take cover from the hill, and proceed to move while keeping concealment to another building, hoping the shooter has not been able to tell for certain where I am.

I move to the far east of the building and peek around the corner.  I scan the hill for a few seconds, and spot the sniper about 250 meters away facing my direction.  He is not shooting me now, so he either does not see me, or is waiting for a better shot.  I cant tell.

There are fields in every direction.  My options seem to be to sprint away from him and hope he continues to miss, or advance on him with my shotgun.  I decide to try the later, and I begin to creep through cover closer to his position.  However, on the way I notice movement coming down the hill.  I check, and the sniper is still in his spot.  Great.  The sniper has a friend, and he is making his way towards me.  I peek around a wall, and see him aiming a rifle at me from about 50 meters.

I turn, putting a concrete wall between me and the closer shooter.  I spring back into a barn, but get shot in the back by the sniper on the way in.  Severely injured, I bandage my wound and wait what feels like a long time with my shotgun pointed at the barn door.  Eventually I try to creep towards the barn door to see if my assailants are outside, and as I do I am shot dead by the closer one.  My vision was so bad that I couldnt see him anyways.  They never said a word, and by the looks of them they couldnt possibly use any of my meager gear.

Guess they are just a couple of guys who enjoy hunting people.  I will watch the hills more carefully next time.

Life 3: Firefight

This is pasted from my clan forums.  What a night.  Lets just say that image to the right is no longer accurate.  I am a new spawn now

Last night we had a group of 5 on. I met up with the group in the north firehouse in Elektro. It was myself, Thaddios, Greg, and at least 2 others but now I am forgetting the names.

We had one pleasant encounter with a player in the firehouse. He was detained, questioned, and then released with supplies after some good banter. Strangely, my handcuff keys did not seem to release him from his bindings, despite removing the keys form my inventory.

We then RV'd at the green house with the water pump on the hill above Elektro, and proceeded east along the wooded hills northeast of the highway to reports of bandits in Kamyshovo. The trip to Kamyshovo is uneventful. We survey the town, enter it, drink our fill at the pump, and egress back to the woods edge without incident. It is decided that Thaddios will lead the other two guys down the main road back to Elektro, and Greg and myself will climb the hill once more to provide overwatch.

Contact
We proceeded back towards the green house. 3 of us are coming up through the woods from the highway. Greg is above me somewhere on sniper hill, and I am about halfway up the hill just higher up than the house. I believe I was the first one with eyes on the house. I spot two players, and call out eyes on 2 players at the green house trying to determine if they are part of the team who took the road. I get a confirm that the players at the house are friendly, but there are 3 not 2.

Puzzled, about 5 seconds later I spot our 3 guys moving towards the green house from the east, and then call out that there are at least 2 OTHER players here and they headed west northwest out of my vision, across the road. Someone else in the group (was it greg?) also spots them and confirms. At this point, three of our men are at the east side of the green house.

At this point I move about 10 meters closer to the road on the hill just above the house. After clearing some bushes, I practically bump into an unidentified player. He is within 10 meters, kneeling, with his back to me. He has a mosin raised to his shoulder, and a fire ax over his back. The mosin is pointing down either towards the road near the house, or towards our friendlies at the house.

It is at this point where communication truly broke down for me. I quickly say that I have an armed player on the hill in team coms. Then, I draw my fnx45 and open direct communication to the player ordering him to stop moving and put his hands on his head. He complies. There is a lot of confusion on coms at this point. I honestly cannot remember who was speaking or what was said. I had virtual tunnel vision on the player with his hands up. It should be noted that was the first time I was in this kind of situation in DayZ.

I tell the player over direct communication that I intend to restrain him with handcuffs. He begs me not to shoot him. At this point it has only been about 15 seconds since I spotted the player, 20 seconds since our team got to the east side of the green house, and 25 seconds since I spotted two other players (now out of sight) to the west.

I move to the complying player with his hands up, hit my hotkey to pull out my cuffs, then a shot rings out. I dont think I am hit, but I start to panic looking around for its source. It was very close. About 2 seconds later, I see the two players I had seen moving west from the green house coming up the hill at me from the north west. They are firing at me with M4s. I have just enough time to pull out my pistol, rapid fire 4 or 5 rounds at one of the two players from the hip, hear the complying player yell "dont shoot!", and then I am dead. I am pretty sure the guy with his hands up was also shot.

At this point I cant say for sure what happens. I try to get out of my tunnel vision and communicate to the rest of the team what is happening. From my corpse I can hear extended gunfire. I know Thaddios was killed while returning fire, but I dont know where. Team coms are a jumble of people trying to talk. I respawned and booked it back down there. I made it to the green house where two of our team remained. The direct hostiles were gone, at least 1 was killed. The bodies were all gone by the time I made it back.

The two in the house were pinned by sniper fire. I run in just as one of us is hit. We spend some time trying to revive him from being unconcious, and suddenly the three of us are killed by M4 fire close range from one of the windows of the house.

Hindsight
I need to learn to communicate better. Apparently, my exact position near the house was unclear to the team. Also, I should have been clearer and more sure of myself that I saw unidentified players. Also, I was told that I should not have initiated contact with the player with the mosin I found until more of the team was with me, but in the moment I thought he was about to shoot my friends so I acted. Perhaps in hindsight I should have just shot him? He had a weapon up to his shoulder in the direction of friendlies, and was not announcing his presence. What do you guys think I should have done differently? Can anyone else who was on add details I missed?

Life 3: Meta

I have decided to discontinue regular use of a first person "in character" narrator in the posts.  It gets weird with talking about working and communicating with people through teamspeak or some other chat program.  Also, many of the issues afflicting the alpha gameplay experience are quite hard to communicate from the perspective of the game character.  For example, zombies rising up through the floor of a second story building to attack you; friends accidentally running hundreds of meters farther than it appears to them, friends being disconnected, etc.

My clan, Angels of the Void, is a large group with a common interest in eliminating bandits and helping bambis (new players) get started.  Last night I was able to join up with a group of them.  Eight players on the screen (which is more than I have ever seen at once) and we all are reasonably geared up AND working together!  It was an entirely unique gaming experience so far.

We moved as a unit from the Balota airfield through the woods along the north side of Cherno.  I was one of two assigned to eliminate zombies with my ax so no other players would hear our gunshots.  We were playing on a full server, but actually did not encounter any players.  We did spot a lone player on a rooftop far away.  He turned towards us with his rifle, and one of our snipers sent a shot right by his head and he retreated out of our sight.

There are plenty of logistical problems with such a large group at this stage.  There is no in-game HUD as I have stated previously, so there is always a lingering danger of friendly fire.  On more than one occasion someone would call out "Who is that guy over there by the tree!?" to which someone else would call out "Thats me!".  Additionally, it became difficult to tell who you were dealing with.  If I said "I have a spare bandage", it was challenging for my squad mates to figure out who I was.  One or two players had recurring disconnection issues that required the group to hold up in several questionable positions as well.

I do enjoy the game much more with the option of having another player or two that I can trust!

Life 3: DayZ giveth, and DayZ taketh away

There was a significant update pushed out to the stable servers since I last played.  It would appear that they took data backups several days ago, as my player has been reverted to when he was injured outside of Polana.  This is an alpha in active development, so things like this happen.  Since I have last played, I also joined a clan in order to have people that I hopefully would be able to trust when playing together.  Its a bit meta, as my character has no way of communicating long distance, but I changed my plans and began to move towards Cherno where they are currently.

Its night time.  The first thing I do, is eat and drink my fill from the food I have, as I am in bad enough shape that its difficult to see with the darkness and blurriness.  I rest for a while, and can feel myself improving.  I am in contact with some potential friends, but they are several kilometers to the southwest around a city known as Cherno.

It is extremely dark.  I have a small flashlight designed to be mounted to a rifle.  I can see the stars in the sky, and the moon is up, but most of the world is simple a silhouette against the night sky.  Once in a while a rock or lightly colored building will reflect the moonlight and become visible.  The light works well, but the cone of light it casts is very narrow.

I get my compass out, and find an angle where it catches enough light to be seen.  I head out in the direction of my contacts.  I follow a road that is leading me south to the coast.  With the cover of darkness, I am not worried about being seen.  I dont even use my flashlight, as I can hear my footsteps on the roadway.  Once in a while I click the light on momentarily to make sure I have not gone astray.

I stop in a small villa that I pass to check for supplies.  I end up defending myself against a few walkers, which proves difficult in the dim light, and I take a few hits.  I bandage my wounds, and uncover some more food, an IV starter kit, and some .357 rounds.

Much of the night is uneventful travel.  Its deceptively peaceful.  I eventually find myself heading down a steep hill.  The reflection of the sea in the moonlight in front of me lets me know I have made it back to the coast.  Cherno is west of here, so I head in that direction.  I stop to check a roadside warehouse on the outskirts of Elektro and I find a fire ax to replace my worn baseball bat.

Elektro is well known to be a dangerous city.  I stop for the night on its outskirts to consider my options.

Life 3: Everything to lose

The next morning, I survey the town below.  I can see zombies and closed doors; both are signs that I could be the only one here.  I advance, still cautious.

It turns out to be quite fruitful.  I find a large fireman's ax, which proves to be even more effective at dispatching zombies as I take down a half dozen during my looting.  Loot is plentiful.  I find first aid, food, another canteen, and plenty more that I leave behind.  I find a propane tank and a portable propane stove.  I fill my water containers, and move west northwest.

There is another town within sight of the first town.  The first thing I begin to loot is a parking lot.  I find a map of the area.  The previous town was Novy Sobor, and this town in Stary Sobor.  I find much of the same things here, and I need little of it.  However, the map indicates a small military compound across a field northwest of town.  I decided that I should check it out, since both of these nearby towns had not been looted it was possible the military compound also had not been looted.

Getting there was nerve racking.  I sprinted at least 200 meters across a field when there was no cover available.  There was some trees and brush along one of the roads leading north est towards the base, so I hunkered down when I got to this point.  Squinting at the base several hundred yards ahead of me, I notice movement.  There is a person running away from the base in a north east direction.  I can tell by their posture that they are holding a rifle of some kind.  I watch them move until they are out of sight.

Assuming that person looted anything worth looting, I am somewhat dejected as I creep into the base.  I crawl under a hole in the eastern wall, and head for the largest building, which turns out to be some kind of administration building.  The front door is still shut!  I go inside.  Within minutes I find a magazine full of rounds for my handgun, and I lock and load.  I find a camo jacket to match my pants.  I find a large (empty) ammo box, and upstairs I find several boxes of 5.56m and 7.62mm ammo.

I head outside.  The first barracks I find appears to have been looted.  I find a pair of black gloves and a kevlar helmet.  I find a green hunting backpack, which is much harder to notice than the bright red hiking backpack I have, so I swap my stuff out.

In the next barracks, I find an M4 automatic rifle in the first bedroom.  Completing my search of the barracks turns up two 30 round magazines, which I load with ammunition and slap one into the rifle.  I find a second magazine for my handgun, as well as a tactical vest.  I grab a pair of military boots and run.  By the time I am sprinting into a nearby patch of trees, I look like I am ready for deployment.

It is a strange feeling at this point in the game for me.  I know I don't want to be a random bandit, but now that I am fully equipped I am at a loss of what to do.  I am healthy, stocked with food, water, medical supplies, ammunition, and a means to deliver said ammunition.  Where will I go from here?

Life 3: Healthy

The health system in DayZ is really cool.  Your virtual body actually has five types of storage, and they are all related.  You have your stomach, your hydration, your blood level, your energy level, and your health level.  Keep in mind that none of these have a "bar" or anything on the GUI.  Your stomach, energy, and hydration levels are communicated vaguely through status messages ("I feel thirsty").  Your blood level is expressed as the color saturation in your vision.  As you lose blood, colors begin to fade towards black and white.  Your health is expressed by blurriness in your vision.

Before this session, I had been thinking my blurry screen was some kind of bug in the alpha.  Thanks to Merino and his in-depth video guides, I learned what my issue was.  If you are going to play DayZ you need to watch his videos.

I find myself squinting to make out the shapes in Polana.  I need to eat, drink, and rest to feel better.  However, I need more supplies to do that.  Stuck between a rock and a hard place, I try to move back into town.  I have to fend off two more zombies with my bat, and now I am even more exhausted.  I make it to the town well, and I drink my fill.  I eat a can of beans, fill my canteen, and head off north west through the trees.

A short walk brings me to the edge of a field looking down onto another town.  I stay in the the woods, sipping my canteen and munching on rice.  As my strength returns, my vision begins to clear.  Before long, I am 100% again.  Side note, raw rice is really crunchy.

I don't spend much time in this town.  I check a few buildings, and pick up another can of food or two.  Really, the only thing worth note that I find is an ax.  After felling a pair of zombies with it, it seems much more effective than the bat was.  As I head back towards the trees I came from, I notice a sign that says this is the town of Gorka.

I decide to change it up and head more to the west.  However, there are a lot of open fields in this area, and being without cover makes me nervous.  I end up heading slightly south west in order to stay in the trees.  Much more time goes by.  I pass a country road or two, but hardly anything of note.  At some point, I run out of trees.  There are patches here and there around the road that leads in a south western direction, but most of the area north of me is open.  I sprint from one clump of trees to another, ending up on a hill.  At the edge of the woods, I find myself looking into a sunset over a slightly larger town down in the valley.  About 200 meters lie between the edge of the woods and the town.  I spot a walker or two shambling around the field closer to the town.  I decide to move into the town the next morning.

Life 3: Chopped

I logged back in, but this time the server had 35 players or so instead of 5.  It really heightens the intensity just knowing you are more likely to run into someone.

I head north from Dolina through the woods for cover.  I come upon what appears to be a large construction site with a road running northwest and southeast on the northern edge of the site.  I crouch at the treeline and carefully survey the area.  I can see at least two zombies around the perimeter, but no movement inside the site.  A concrete wall surrounds most of the site, but I can see an opening in the wall near a small pond on the south side.  I head for it.

I have to crawl under the gap in the wall.  Inside, there are a few small out buildings and then the main concrete structure.  Searching the outer buildings turns up nothing of interest, so I head into the main structure.  I find a large camping pack tucked into the corner of a small unfinished room.  Its red, but it holds so much more than the pack I am currently using that I decide to switch out for it.  Searching the rest of the structure turns up more inferior backpacks, some small tools, and a shovel, but not needing any of these I pass them up.

At one point I feel like I hear a groan or something from another person.  I make my way back down the stairs and around to the front of the structure facing the road.  I freeze when I see the body.  There is a woman's body here, wearing a shirt and some underwear.  The body is still bleeding, and I have no idea how long it has been there.  I cant tell if she fell off the structure, or if she was shot or what.  There is a hill opposite the road, and I become wary of possible snipers.

I head back to my hole through the wall, and quickly get back into the treeline.  Pausing in a dense bush, I survey the hill for snipers, but I don't see anything.  I decide to follow the road northwest from the treeline.

The road leads to a town called Polana.  This is probably the second largest town so far, after the city I first found myself in at the coast.  I am uphill looking down onto the town from the southeast.  There is a small sparse line of trees heading down into the town from here, so I begin to follow that creeping along as discretely as possible.  I actually sneak up on a zombie looking the other way.  I decide to get the jump on him so he doesn't come chasing me later.  Once he is dispatched, I continue towards town.

At the edge of town, I once again stop and look for movement.  Some time passes, and I decide its safe.  I begin my sweep at the southern most building.  I check a barn, some sheds, and a few two story houses.  I find a lot of soda and food.  I take some with me, eat some, and leave the more damaged items.  I check a few ruined cars, and find a new pair of shoes in the trunk of one.  I move on to some kind of supermarket.  Inside I find more 7.62mm ammo, and even more food.  I begin to head to the next building, when I catch movement out of the corner of my left eye.

I move so that there is a fence between me and what looked like a man running into a building northeast of the supermarket.  I creep around, but the man must have seen or heard me as well, as he has turned in my direction.  He is wearing clothing similar to mine, with a green backpack and a motorcycle helmet on.  He appears to be unarmed.

"Hello!" I say, "Friendly here, I will keep out of your way."  The man raises his fists and lowers them a few times.  I wave as a gesture of good will.  The man draws a fire ax from over his shoulder.

"Hey, don't worry."  I say.  "I'll be on my way."  Wordless, the man responds by charging at me; the ax waving wildly above his head.  Before I can react to what is happening, he lands a blow, and I am bleeding.

I take off sprinting to the south east from where I came.  I leap a low fence, cut around a house, and head a few dozen meters outside of town.  I stop for a moment, with blood dripping down my clothes.  I begin to search my pack for a bandage.  "Maybe he just wanted me out of the town." I thought.  Just then, he turned the corner of the building, still running at me with his ax.

I resume fleeing.  I head down to the barn, weaving through 3 meter tall piles of straw and hay.  I head around a shed and through a small opening in a tall fence.  I run downhill, across a road running southwest out of town, and into the trees on the other side of the road.  I make my way another hundred yards uphill.  I am still bleeding, and I am starting to feel faint.  The colors in my vision seem fainter than before.  I stop in some dense foliage and begin to bandage myself, looking downhill.  No sign of the crazed ax man.  I drink two sodas and eat a can of tuna, hoping that the sugar and protein will help my body replenish the blood Ive lost.

"What an asshole."  I think in disbelief.

I was genuinely surprised that a man armed with an ax would try to attack another man armed with a bat.  It seems like a huge risk to take, but maybe he had medical supplies where he thought he could heal himself if he won the melee?  In hindsight I wondered what would have happened if I had drawn my FNx45 on him.  Would he call the bluff?  Why didn't he respond?  Did he even speak English?
