Life 3: Firefight

This is pasted from my clan forums.  What a night.  Lets just say that image to the right is no longer accurate.  I am a new spawn now

Last night we had a group of 5 on. I met up with the group in the north firehouse in Elektro. It was myself, Thaddios, Greg, and at least 2 others but now I am forgetting the names.

We had one pleasant encounter with a player in the firehouse. He was detained, questioned, and then released with supplies after some good banter. Strangely, my handcuff keys did not seem to release him from his bindings, despite removing the keys form my inventory.

We then RV'd at the green house with the water pump on the hill above Elektro, and proceeded east along the wooded hills northeast of the highway to reports of bandits in Kamyshovo. The trip to Kamyshovo is uneventful. We survey the town, enter it, drink our fill at the pump, and egress back to the woods edge without incident. It is decided that Thaddios will lead the other two guys down the main road back to Elektro, and Greg and myself will climb the hill once more to provide overwatch.

Contact
We proceeded back towards the green house. 3 of us are coming up through the woods from the highway. Greg is above me somewhere on sniper hill, and I am about halfway up the hill just higher up than the house. I believe I was the first one with eyes on the house. I spot two players, and call out eyes on 2 players at the green house trying to determine if they are part of the team who took the road. I get a confirm that the players at the house are friendly, but there are 3 not 2.

Puzzled, about 5 seconds later I spot our 3 guys moving towards the green house from the east, and then call out that there are at least 2 OTHER players here and they headed west northwest out of my vision, across the road. Someone else in the group (was it greg?) also spots them and confirms. At this point, three of our men are at the east side of the green house.

At this point I move about 10 meters closer to the road on the hill just above the house. After clearing some bushes, I practically bump into an unidentified player. He is within 10 meters, kneeling, with his back to me. He has a mosin raised to his shoulder, and a fire ax over his back. The mosin is pointing down either towards the road near the house, or towards our friendlies at the house.

It is at this point where communication truly broke down for me. I quickly say that I have an armed player on the hill in team coms. Then, I draw my fnx45 and open direct communication to the player ordering him to stop moving and put his hands on his head. He complies. There is a lot of confusion on coms at this point. I honestly cannot remember who was speaking or what was said. I had virtual tunnel vision on the player with his hands up. It should be noted that was the first time I was in this kind of situation in DayZ.

I tell the player over direct communication that I intend to restrain him with handcuffs. He begs me not to shoot him. At this point it has only been about 15 seconds since I spotted the player, 20 seconds since our team got to the east side of the green house, and 25 seconds since I spotted two other players (now out of sight) to the west.

I move to the complying player with his hands up, hit my hotkey to pull out my cuffs, then a shot rings out. I dont think I am hit, but I start to panic looking around for its source. It was very close. About 2 seconds later, I see the two players I had seen moving west from the green house coming up the hill at me from the north west. They are firing at me with M4s. I have just enough time to pull out my pistol, rapid fire 4 or 5 rounds at one of the two players from the hip, hear the complying player yell "dont shoot!", and then I am dead. I am pretty sure the guy with his hands up was also shot.

At this point I cant say for sure what happens. I try to get out of my tunnel vision and communicate to the rest of the team what is happening. From my corpse I can hear extended gunfire. I know Thaddios was killed while returning fire, but I dont know where. Team coms are a jumble of people trying to talk. I respawned and booked it back down there. I made it to the green house where two of our team remained. The direct hostiles were gone, at least 1 was killed. The bodies were all gone by the time I made it back.

The two in the house were pinned by sniper fire. I run in just as one of us is hit. We spend some time trying to revive him from being unconcious, and suddenly the three of us are killed by M4 fire close range from one of the windows of the house.

Hindsight
I need to learn to communicate better. Apparently, my exact position near the house was unclear to the team. Also, I should have been clearer and more sure of myself that I saw unidentified players. Also, I was told that I should not have initiated contact with the player with the mosin I found until more of the team was with me, but in the moment I thought he was about to shoot my friends so I acted. Perhaps in hindsight I should have just shot him? He had a weapon up to his shoulder in the direction of friendlies, and was not announcing his presence. What do you guys think I should have done differently? Can anyone else who was on add details I missed?

Life 3: Meta

I have decided to discontinue regular use of a first person "in character" narrator in the posts.  It gets weird with talking about working and communicating with people through teamspeak or some other chat program.  Also, many of the issues afflicting the alpha gameplay experience are quite hard to communicate from the perspective of the game character.  For example, zombies rising up through the floor of a second story building to attack you; friends accidentally running hundreds of meters farther than it appears to them, friends being disconnected, etc.

My clan, Angels of the Void, is a large group with a common interest in eliminating bandits and helping bambis (new players) get started.  Last night I was able to join up with a group of them.  Eight players on the screen (which is more than I have ever seen at once) and we all are reasonably geared up AND working together!  It was an entirely unique gaming experience so far.

We moved as a unit from the Balota airfield through the woods along the north side of Cherno.  I was one of two assigned to eliminate zombies with my ax so no other players would hear our gunshots.  We were playing on a full server, but actually did not encounter any players.  We did spot a lone player on a rooftop far away.  He turned towards us with his rifle, and one of our snipers sent a shot right by his head and he retreated out of our sight.

There are plenty of logistical problems with such a large group at this stage.  There is no in-game HUD as I have stated previously, so there is always a lingering danger of friendly fire.  On more than one occasion someone would call out "Who is that guy over there by the tree!?" to which someone else would call out "Thats me!".  Additionally, it became difficult to tell who you were dealing with.  If I said "I have a spare bandage", it was challenging for my squad mates to figure out who I was.  One or two players had recurring disconnection issues that required the group to hold up in several questionable positions as well.

I do enjoy the game much more with the option of having another player or two that I can trust!

Life 3: DayZ giveth, and DayZ taketh away

There was a significant update pushed out to the stable servers since I last played.  It would appear that they took data backups several days ago, as my player has been reverted to when he was injured outside of Polana.  This is an alpha in active development, so things like this happen.  Since I have last played, I also joined a clan in order to have people that I hopefully would be able to trust when playing together.  Its a bit meta, as my character has no way of communicating long distance, but I changed my plans and began to move towards Cherno where they are currently.

Its night time.  The first thing I do, is eat and drink my fill from the food I have, as I am in bad enough shape that its difficult to see with the darkness and blurriness.  I rest for a while, and can feel myself improving.  I am in contact with some potential friends, but they are several kilometers to the southwest around a city known as Cherno.

It is extremely dark.  I have a small flashlight designed to be mounted to a rifle.  I can see the stars in the sky, and the moon is up, but most of the world is simple a silhouette against the night sky.  Once in a while a rock or lightly colored building will reflect the moonlight and become visible.  The light works well, but the cone of light it casts is very narrow.

I get my compass out, and find an angle where it catches enough light to be seen.  I head out in the direction of my contacts.  I follow a road that is leading me south to the coast.  With the cover of darkness, I am not worried about being seen.  I dont even use my flashlight, as I can hear my footsteps on the roadway.  Once in a while I click the light on momentarily to make sure I have not gone astray.

I stop in a small villa that I pass to check for supplies.  I end up defending myself against a few walkers, which proves difficult in the dim light, and I take a few hits.  I bandage my wounds, and uncover some more food, an IV starter kit, and some .357 rounds.

Much of the night is uneventful travel.  Its deceptively peaceful.  I eventually find myself heading down a steep hill.  The reflection of the sea in the moonlight in front of me lets me know I have made it back to the coast.  Cherno is west of here, so I head in that direction.  I stop to check a roadside warehouse on the outskirts of Elektro and I find a fire ax to replace my worn baseball bat.

Elektro is well known to be a dangerous city.  I stop for the night on its outskirts to consider my options.

Life 3: Everything to lose

The next morning, I survey the town below.  I can see zombies and closed doors; both are signs that I could be the only one here.  I advance, still cautious.

It turns out to be quite fruitful.  I find a large fireman's ax, which proves to be even more effective at dispatching zombies as I take down a half dozen during my looting.  Loot is plentiful.  I find first aid, food, another canteen, and plenty more that I leave behind.  I find a propane tank and a portable propane stove.  I fill my water containers, and move west northwest.

There is another town within sight of the first town.  The first thing I begin to loot is a parking lot.  I find a map of the area.  The previous town was Novy Sobor, and this town in Stary Sobor.  I find much of the same things here, and I need little of it.  However, the map indicates a small military compound across a field northwest of town.  I decided that I should check it out, since both of these nearby towns had not been looted it was possible the military compound also had not been looted.

Getting there was nerve racking.  I sprinted at least 200 meters across a field when there was no cover available.  There was some trees and brush along one of the roads leading north est towards the base, so I hunkered down when I got to this point.  Squinting at the base several hundred yards ahead of me, I notice movement.  There is a person running away from the base in a north east direction.  I can tell by their posture that they are holding a rifle of some kind.  I watch them move until they are out of sight.

Assuming that person looted anything worth looting, I am somewhat dejected as I creep into the base.  I crawl under a hole in the eastern wall, and head for the largest building, which turns out to be some kind of administration building.  The front door is still shut!  I go inside.  Within minutes I find a magazine full of rounds for my handgun, and I lock and load.  I find a camo jacket to match my pants.  I find a large (empty) ammo box, and upstairs I find several boxes of 5.56m and 7.62mm ammo.

I head outside.  The first barracks I find appears to have been looted.  I find a pair of black gloves and a kevlar helmet.  I find a green hunting backpack, which is much harder to notice than the bright red hiking backpack I have, so I swap my stuff out.

In the next barracks, I find an M4 automatic rifle in the first bedroom.  Completing my search of the barracks turns up two 30 round magazines, which I load with ammunition and slap one into the rifle.  I find a second magazine for my handgun, as well as a tactical vest.  I grab a pair of military boots and run.  By the time I am sprinting into a nearby patch of trees, I look like I am ready for deployment.

It is a strange feeling at this point in the game for me.  I know I don't want to be a random bandit, but now that I am fully equipped I am at a loss of what to do.  I am healthy, stocked with food, water, medical supplies, ammunition, and a means to deliver said ammunition.  Where will I go from here?

Life 3: Healthy

The health system in DayZ is really cool.  Your virtual body actually has five types of storage, and they are all related.  You have your stomach, your hydration, your blood level, your energy level, and your health level.  Keep in mind that none of these have a "bar" or anything on the GUI.  Your stomach, energy, and hydration levels are communicated vaguely through status messages ("I feel thirsty").  Your blood level is expressed as the color saturation in your vision.  As you lose blood, colors begin to fade towards black and white.  Your health is expressed by blurriness in your vision.

Before this session, I had been thinking my blurry screen was some kind of bug in the alpha.  Thanks to Merino and his in-depth video guides, I learned what my issue was.  If you are going to play DayZ you need to watch his videos.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9YSGX22B6Z3k9-hJzJcz4w/videos

I find myself squinting to make out the shapes in Polana.  I need to eat, drink, and rest to feel better.  However, I need more supplies to do that.  Stuck between a rock and a hard place, I try to move back into town.  I have to fend off two more zombies with my bat, and now I am even more exhausted.  I make it to the town well, and I drink my fill.  I eat a can of beans, fill my canteen, and head off north west through the trees.

A short walk brings me to the edge of a field looking down onto another town.  I stay in the the woods, sipping my canteen and munching on rice.  As my strength returns, my vision begins to clear.  Before long, I am 100% again.  Side note, raw rice is really crunchy.

I don't spend much time in this town.  I check a few buildings, and pick up another can of food or two.  Really, the only thing worth note that I find is an ax.  After felling a pair of zombies with it, it seems much more effective than the bat was.  As I head back towards the trees I came from, I notice a sign that says this is the town of Gorka.

I decide to change it up and head more to the west.  However, there are a lot of open fields in this area, and being without cover makes me nervous.  I end up heading slightly south west in order to stay in the trees.  Much more time goes by.  I pass a country road or two, but hardly anything of note.  At some point, I run out of trees.  There are patches here and there around the road that leads in a south western direction, but most of the area north of me is open.  I sprint from one clump of trees to another, ending up on a hill.  At the edge of the woods, I find myself looking into a sunset over a slightly larger town down in the valley.  About 200 meters lie between the edge of the woods and the town.  I spot a walker or two shambling around the field closer to the town.  I decide to move into the town the next morning.

Life 3: Chopped

I logged back in, but this time the server had 35 players or so instead of 5.  It really heightens the intensity just knowing you are more likely to run into someone.

I head north from Dolina through the woods for cover.  I come upon what appears to be a large construction site with a road running northwest and southeast on the northern edge of the site.  I crouch at the treeline and carefully survey the area.  I can see at least two zombies around the perimeter, but no movement inside the site.  A concrete wall surrounds most of the site, but I can see an opening in the wall near a small pond on the south side.  I head for it.

I have to crawl under the gap in the wall.  Inside, there are a few small out buildings and then the main concrete structure.  Searching the outer buildings turns up nothing of interest, so I head into the main structure.  I find a large camping pack tucked into the corner of a small unfinished room.  Its red, but it holds so much more than the pack I am currently using that I decide to switch out for it.  Searching the rest of the structure turns up more inferior backpacks, some small tools, and a shovel, but not needing any of these I pass them up.

At one point I feel like I hear a groan or something from another person.  I make my way back down the stairs and around to the front of the structure facing the road.  I freeze when I see the body.  There is a woman's body here, wearing a shirt and some underwear.  The body is still bleeding, and I have no idea how long it has been there.  I cant tell if she fell off the structure, or if she was shot or what.  There is a hill opposite the road, and I become wary of possible snipers.

I head back to my hole through the wall, and quickly get back into the treeline.  Pausing in a dense bush, I survey the hill for snipers, but I don't see anything.  I decide to follow the road northwest from the treeline.

The road leads to a town called Polana.  This is probably the second largest town so far, after the city I first found myself in at the coast.  I am uphill looking down onto the town from the southeast.  There is a small sparse line of trees heading down into the town from here, so I begin to follow that creeping along as discretely as possible.  I actually sneak up on a zombie looking the other way.  I decide to get the jump on him so he doesn't come chasing me later.  Once he is dispatched, I continue towards town.

At the edge of town, I once again stop and look for movement.  Some time passes, and I decide its safe.  I begin my sweep at the southern most building.  I check a barn, some sheds, and a few two story houses.  I find a lot of soda and food.  I take some with me, eat some, and leave the more damaged items.  I check a few ruined cars, and find a new pair of shoes in the trunk of one.  I move on to some kind of supermarket.  Inside I find more 7.62mm ammo, and even more food.  I begin to head to the next building, when I catch movement out of the corner of my left eye.

I move so that there is a fence between me and what looked like a man running into a building northeast of the supermarket.  I creep around, but the man must have seen or heard me as well, as he has turned in my direction.  He is wearing clothing similar to mine, with a green backpack and a motorcycle helmet on.  He appears to be unarmed.

"Hello!" I say, "Friendly here, I will keep out of your way."  The man raises his fists and lowers them a few times.  I wave as a gesture of good will.  The man draws a fire ax from over his shoulder.

"Hey, don't worry."  I say.  "I'll be on my way."  Wordless, the man responds by charging at me; the ax waving wildly above his head.  Before I can react to what is happening, he lands a blow, and I am bleeding.

I take off sprinting to the south east from where I came.  I leap a low fence, cut around a house, and head a few dozen meters outside of town.  I stop for a moment, with blood dripping down my clothes.  I begin to search my pack for a bandage.  "Maybe he just wanted me out of the town." I thought.  Just then, he turned the corner of the building, still running at me with his ax.

I resume fleeing.  I head down to the barn, weaving through 3 meter tall piles of straw and hay.  I head around a shed and through a small opening in a tall fence.  I run downhill, across a road running southwest out of town, and into the trees on the other side of the road.  I make my way another hundred yards uphill.  I am still bleeding, and I am starting to feel faint.  The colors in my vision seem fainter than before.  I stop in some dense foliage and begin to bandage myself, looking downhill.  No sign of the crazed ax man.  I drink two sodas and eat a can of tuna, hoping that the sugar and protein will help my body replenish the blood Ive lost.

"What an asshole."  I think in disbelief.

I was genuinely surprised that a man armed with an ax would try to attack another man armed with a bat.  It seems like a huge risk to take, but maybe he had medical supplies where he thought he could heal himself if he won the melee?  In hindsight I wondered what would have happened if I had drawn my FNx45 on him.  Would he call the bluff?  Why didn't he respond?  Did he even speak English?

Life 3: Zombies - Meh...

Using the rags, I bandage the wound I received from the zombie.  It doesn't appear to be serious.  Feeling empowered, I finish searching the buildings at the crossroads.  I find a backpack like the one I am using, but it is green instead of orange, so I go with it in hopes of blending in even better.

I follow the road east to a town called Dolina.  As I reach the first few buildings, it doesn't take long for a few zombies to come running towards me.  Too bad for them; I have this figured out.  Using the same strategy of dancing around them as I hit them, I am able to put both zombies down without incident.  I use the same tactic several more times as I scavenge the town.  I find rope, disinfectant spray, a morphine injection, proper bandages, more food, a refillable water canteen, and finally - some .45 ACP ammo!

My excitement fades quickly as I realize that I still cannot use my handgun, because it apparently did not have a magazine in it when I picked it up.  (In reality, I should still be able to lock the slide back and load and fire one round at a time.  Well, unless the FNx 45 has a magazine disconnect safety feature.  Oh well, maybe in a later release.)  Dejected, I finish searching the town, and find a few water purification tablets before heading to the shade of a large oak tree north of town to plan my next move.

This was really quite a long session.  I am surprised at how hard it has been to locate a functioning weapon.  Granted, I have not come across any kind of military or police facility.  I am also disappointed in how long it takes to kill a zombie with my bat.  We have all see The Walking Dead, and we all know their heads are made of wet paper mache.

Life 3: Taking a Stand

I logged onto the same server that I had been playing, but tonight it only had 3-5 people on it instead of the 25-35 it previously had.  I thought that would leave me with plenty of uncontested loot, but really I did not come away with much.

With my new backpack on my shoulders, I pushed uphill to the north northwest from the roadside restaurant.  It didn't take long before there was not a structure in sight.  The woods are actually very peaceful when you are alone and not being chased by zombies or shot at.

After some time, I notice the woods to my east are thinning, and I catch a glimpse of a building.  I head that way, and at the edge of the woods I find myself looking down on another small village surrounded by fields.  I make my way in.  My searching turns up some canned spaghetti and canned tuna, which thanks to my can-opener I thoroughly enjoy.  I find a black sweatshirt, and op for it over my bright yellow rain coat.  Hopefully I will stand out less.  I find some more 7.62mm ammo, a can of propane, a battery, and a bayonet.  I also find a road sign.  This is the village of Staroye.

I'm starting to really need a drink, so I hunt through the streets until I spot a water pump.  I had not seen a soul living or dead the whole time, but as soon as I stoop to pump some water for myself I hear a gurgling growl from behind me.

I take one more quick gulp, and then I sprint off to the woods, making a long circle almost 200 meters in diameter, coming back around to the pump.  It seems like I lost the zombie, so I drink a bit more.  I hear another guttural scream - its a different zombie.  I go to run the same route, but I pick up the first zombie again!

After some circling, I manage to lose both long enough to get my fill of water.  I go to check the last two buildings at the north end of town, when two more zombies begin to chase me.  Tired of playing ring around the water pump, I book it across the field north of town into the woods. I follow the northern most road from the treeline, and after a very short time, I am at an even smaller village.  The sign says it is called Shakhovka.  I find more food, and a soda to drink, but I still end up getting chased out of town by zombies.

I head north through the woods, frustrated at not finding a way to use my FNx45 yet.  I even found a holster in Shakhovka before being chased out.  I come to a field, and the road forks to the east and west in the field in front of me.  I decide to follow it east, and it leads to a "T" intersection with a few small buildings at the crossroads.  In the first building, I find a baseball bat.  I opt for it over my monkey wrench as it would seem to have more reach.  This is about the time I realize there is a zombie closing in on me.

"Screw it."  I think, as I raise the bat.  I can't just flee town every time I see a zombie.  I have noticed that the zombies can run at a good pace, but aren't very good at turning.  I sidestep in circles around the zombie, swinging my bat wildly.  I hit the zombie 3 times, 5 times, 8 times...  It seems like it will never drop, when finally a blow sends it limply to the ground.

Wait.  I feel warm blood on my clothes.

Life 3: The Basics of Survival

During most of this time, I had some kind of bug going on where I would just hear zombie sounds intermittently, even if I was alone in the middle of a field.  I wonder if they throw that in as a paranoia effect?

Once I reach the last building before the open field, a dilapidated shed, I stop to catch my breath and see if I am being pursued.  Some time passes, and there are no signs of anyone behind me.  I am really thirsty now, need to move.  I crouch down, and begin moving towards towards the farmhouse I had picked out from near the shore.  It is nicer than most homes I have seen.  There are two small sheds, and the main house is at least two stories tall.  I stop a few times looking for movement.  Listening.

When I get to the house, I check over my shoulder one more time.  The unknown city on the coast sits there, with no movement visible to me from the porch of the farmhouse.  The house is unoccupied.  I find a pair of military style cargo pants which let me hold more stuff.  I find a yellow raincoat with some pockets.  I put it on realizing its probably not the most concealable thing ever, but I need the pocket space.  Most importantly of all, I find a can of soda, canned spaghetti, and on the floor of the bedroom upstairs an FNx 45 handgun!

The downside, is there is no ammo for the weapon.  On the bright side, I think I am a little less thirsty.  I drank the soda, and ate the spaghetti right away but I still have some thirst.  On the way out of the house, I notice something on a cabinet that I had almost missed - a compass!

I leave the farmhouse headed north, uphill, into the trees.  There is a road ahead.  I move across it and keep to the trees, moving north.  Out in the valley to my right is what looks like a power plant, but I keep moving north.  I am hoping to find some kind of small town where I can forage with less risk of bandits.

Some time passes.  I have been loosely following a road from the treeline for a while now.  I veer off into the woods, thinking of following some power lines off to my west.  To my west it begins to drop downhill, and I can see what looks like a smaller coastal town.  I keep going a bit more north and uphill, when through the trees I spot a few small cottages.

As I advance on the village, a sign out front reads "Pusta".  I wait and watch a few minutes, but dont see anything.  I clear most of the town without incident.  I find an eat some canned tuna, and more canned spaghetti.  I take a can of baked beans with me, and even find a cool pair of aviator sunglasses.  I am no longer hungry, but still thirsty.  Then, I spot a town well!  I drink a half dozen times from the well - much better.

I am clearing the last few small structures in the north of the village, when I hear the scream of a zombie.  Its only one though, and I am able to run north up the steep hill.  Ducking into dense vegetation and over a few downed trees.  After 100 meters or so, I stop and make sure that I am no longer being followed.

After continuing north, moving through steep and densely wooded terrain, I spot a pair of buildings along a road in the valley ahead.  I take my time moving down.  One building is a small shack with nothing of interest, however, the other building appears to be a roadside restaurant with a living quarters.  I find some 7.62mm rounds, and some .357 rounds, but neither will fit in my .45.  Disappointed, I move to check the last room.

WHOA!  I shiny red backpack sitting on the floor just for me!  I throw it over my shoulders, feeling like maybe I finally have something going right.

Im thirsty again.

This was probably my most productive session so far.  I had a non-fatal encounter with a player, and then a successful escape of both a hostile player and a zombie.  The game does an incredible job of making it challenging and fun to survive, and its only in alpha release!  I logged off in the woods outside of the restaurant.  The backpack is a game changer.  I have already had to pick and choose which valuable things to take with me for lack of space.  Should be less of an issue going forward.

Life 3: Third Time is the Charm?

I find myself on a coastline.  There is a city here, and my immediate surroundings are dominated by industrial docks, factories, and cranes.  My instincts obtained from previous incarnations tells me I need to get out of here ASAP, and I know that the woods to the north should be safer.

Im already thirsty.  I decide that I need to get SOME supplies before heading north.  I stick to the coastline to avoid heading into the middle of the city.  I have already heard faint gunshots, so I know I am not alone.  I begin to methodically search the nearest buildings for supplies.  I find a warm hat, and a can opener right away.

I head back downstairs after searching a building, and literally bump into a man with pack holding a mosin nagant rifle.  My tongue catches in my through, and I scramble backwards.  The man throws the rifle over his shoulder and draws a red fire axe into his hands.  Still at a loss for words, the only thing I can think to do is kneel down and put my hands on my head.

"I have nothing" I say.  The man looks me over for a moment, then turns and heads out the door.

I delay a few seconds, then go out of the same door.  There is no sign of the man.  I run to the next building and find a pair of gloves, and a large heavy monkey wrench.  As I exit the building I hear more gunshots, and a zombie scream.  I wait and listen.  These are much closer than before.  I look to the north.  Past a few more industrial buildings is a road, and past the road are a few smaller structures as the terrain moves uphill.  Next is an open expanse with some bushes, and what looks like a farmhouse up on the hill right before the woods get thick.  I decide this is my escape route.

I hear a sound, much closer.  I peek through a hole in the wall and can see a different man with a rifle running around.  He is maybe 50 meters away, and he doesnt seem to see me.  He is moving from my right to my left, and I sit still waiting for him to pass.

"Go", I think.

I start jogging north.  I pass the first building, and then there are gunshots behind me.  I hear a snap on the ground near me and I pick up my pace into a sprint.  I duck through a fence and try to put cover between myself and whoever is behind me.  Rapid shots now, but they sound more distant.  I reach the road, and continue my sprint without looking anywhere but north.

Life 2: Unfortunate Surprise

When I logged on in the farm animal stalls building where I logged off, I was greeted with the sounds of zombie as the game loaded its polygons and textures.  Apparently, a zombie had spawned in literally right behind me since I had logged off.

What the heck?  OH SHIT!  There is a damn zombie hitting me in the back out of nowhere!  I NEVER EVEN SAW HIM COMING (technically her, I guess).

Well now I am sprinting.  I feel warm blood on my clothes.  I don't know where I am going, but I need to hide.  Surely this kitchen knife is no match for... MORE ZOMBIES!  Now two or three are chasing me!  KEEP RUNNING!  I run into a tiny guard house or something at the edge of the farm complex and close the door.  I take the shirt that I had previously torn into rags and bandage my wounds.

Here come the zombies.

"Hopefully this door will keep them out" is what I thought to myself as the zombie proceeds to walk directly through the closed door! (lol alpha release)  I scramble to get the door open as I apparently lack the quantum skills to move through solid matter.  I am bleeding again.

Now I don't know where I am running.  I have heard a few other zombies scream behind me.  I need to get out of this town.  My heart is pounding, I can barely catch my breath, and blood is literally dripping down my clothes.  The colors in the world start to fade a bit.

Im in the woods now, hoping that the cover of trees will conceal me from the zombies.  I apply another bandage to stop the bleeding, but I am still in bad shape.  I find a large fir tree and go prone at the base.  I shuffle around looking in the direction I ran, and I can see one zombie still coming.  It runs up to about 10 meters from my tree and then it just stands there.  Ironically, while waiting on the zombie and looking at landmarks around me and on the map I have, I determine my location.  I'm just North of a small town called Novy Sobor.

I keep still and wait.  Apparently zombies are really patient.  About 15 minutes (real life minutes) go by and nothing changes.  I try to crawl around the zombie, but it sees me.  I sprint away again and hide under another tree, but it just waits me out again.

"Well, do or die" I think.  I stand up, still feeling woozy, and the zombie comes at me.  I manage to dodge its blows for a while, hacking at it with my knife.  It rakes me, and I am bleeding again.  I dance around it slashing, and for a moment I think I've won when it falls to the ground.  This feeling passed though as it started to get back up again.  I resume slashing, and it resumes biting and raking.

Suddenly, I lose consciousness.

Whether it was blood loss or if the zombie just hit me enough I don't know.  I guess I ended up zombie food.

Life 2: Promising New Beginnings

Here I am again, still no clue where.  Unfortunately, nothing gleaned from my previous incarnation about where the heck I am.

Its a different place though for sure.  It looks more like a rural farming community.  There are cottages and sheds, and the only buildings of note are a series of large long barns of some kind, and a cathedral.

I can see my breath, I wonder if its colder here?

I open the door to the first nearby house.  Water!  There are two water bottles, a can of soda, a rotten apple, and a damaged can of tuna.  I'm already thirsty, so I drink one bottle straight away.  I pocket the second one, take the tuna, and leave the apple.  No more thirst!

I search a few more houses with nothing of note.  I saw a pen, a pink baseball hat, and another battery.  However, my pockets are full of food and water, so I just leave them.  While searching the upstairs of a house, I hear a zombie growl and a gunshot that sounds close enough for it to matter to me.  I keep still and listen more... nothing.

When I come out, I don't see anything.  Very disconcerting.  I head into the cathedral.  I find a long sleeve red shirt that I put on right away as it seems cold.  I tear my old shirt into rags and pocket them.

The long barns seem be stalls for some kind of animals.  Pigs maybe?  What do I know, I am no farmer.  The first one has nothing in it, but the second one has treasures!!  I find a knit hat with a poofy ball on the end, some hunting pants with more pockets than my jeans, and a sweatshirt with more pockets than my long sleeve shirt.  I tear the long sleeve shirt to rags, and pocket them in my larger inventory.  Unexpectedly, I find a box of sugary cereal at the end of one of the barns.  Calories pay off big time in the zombie apocalypse.

Oddly enough, I have yet to see a zombie.

I check one more building, and I under a bed I find a pair of jeans.  In the pocket is a map of the area!  At least, I assume its a map of the area.  Looking at the map, I realize I am not even sure where I am.  There is a sign near the church pointing in different directions with town names and distances.  I wish I spoke Russian.  Hopefully tomorrow I can figure out where I am.  Fortunately, the house also yields a kitchen knife.  A meager defense, but probably better than my fists.

I ended the session here.  Time for sleep!

Life 1: Harsh Realities

Well, here I am...  Somewhere...

I have a flashlight, a battery, and my clothes.  I can see a town by the shore a few hundred meters away.  It seems like a good idea to climb this hill next to the town and look around.  The town is relatively small, maybe a dozen buildings.  There are a few bodies on the ground in the street, but I cant tell if they are people or zombies.  I don't see any movement.

I am really thirsty.  Well, here I go into the town.  Searching a house... nothing.  Another house, nothing.  Looked in a few sheds, but nothing of interest.  Maybe there is something of note on the bodies?  I glance down the street and see some people in the distance.  They look armed, but they are headed in the other direction.  The first body looks a lot like me, with nothing but a flashlight to his name.  I move to check another body in an alley between two buildings.

"Hey, turn around." a voice says.

I turn, and come face to face with the muzzle of an M4.  Behind the tactically equiped M4 is a guy in fatigues with a helmet.  I stand.

"No, I like it better when you were kneeling."  he says "Get back down."

"I am unarmed." I say, as I kneel once more.  I hear a sound a turn to my left to see two other men dressed the same.  I raise my hands to them.

"Hey, look at me" the first man says.  I turn back to see him giving me the finger.  "What do you want from me?' I ask.

The next thing I know, he is punching me once, twice, then a gunshot rings from my left.

I'm dead.

Well, that was interesting.  I knew it was very likely to be killed by other players, but I figured it would be because they thought I was a threat, or they wanted something from me.  I guess some kids just like killing unarmed new spawns.
